Overview

The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP®) certification highlights a professional’s ability to identify and assess risks to a project, mitigate threats, and capitalize on opportunities. This credential sets practitioners apart as it acknowledges their expertise in managing crucial projects and abilities in project risk management.

Through the PMI-RMP® Boot Camp, certification candidates will prepare for the examination as well as improve and build their skills to conduct risk planning, identification, and analysis as well as control both known and unknown risks in projects. The course will also guide practitioners on processes, tools, techniques and other related concepts as described in the Practice Standard for Project Risk Management.

Learning Objectives

In addition to preparing you for the PMI-RMP certification examination, this course aims at teaching you the following:

  • Apply the principles, concept and techniques of project management in general and risk management in particular 
  • Describe and understand all Risk Management defined processes, as outlined in the PMI PMBOK Guide and PMI Risk Standard 
  • Use internationally recognized best practices for managing project and operations risks 
  • Apply risk management techniques to determine the true cost and schedule for projects and operations 
  • Demonstrate the impact of successful Risk Management to the organization 
  • Avoid common risk management pitfalls

Prerequisites

Candidates need to meet the following requirements to be eligible for the PMI-RMP certification: 

For Secondary Diploma Holders (High school diploma, associate’s degree, or their equivalent

  • Minimum 4,500 hours of professional project risk management experience within the last five years 
  • 40 hours of project risk management education

For Four-Year Degree Holders (Bachelor’s degree or global equivalent)

  • Minimum 3,000 hours of professional project risk management experience within the last five years 
  • 30 hours of project management education

Examination Format

  • 170 multiple choice questions
  • 150 scorable questions and 20 pretest questions
  • 3.5 hours duration
  • Computer- and paper-based examinations available
  • Closed book exam

What’s Next?

PMI-RMP is a standalone credential. You can, however, expand your knowledge on risk management and project management with other certifications.

Exam & Certification FAQs

Do I need to be a PMI member to become certified?

No, you do not need to be a PMI member to apply for one of the organization’s certifications.

 

Can I attempt the exam in any language aside from English?

No. Currently, PMI only offers this certification exam in English.

 

Where is the examination given?

You can choose to attempt the certification exam at an approved local Pearson VUE testing center or at home/office while monitored by an online proctor.

 

What does the PMI-RMP® certification exam cover?

The PMI-RMP® certification examination will cover the following domains, which are shown with an estimate percentage of questions you will receive:

    • Risk Strategy and Planning (19–20%)
    • Stakeholder Engagement (19–20%)
    • Risk Process Facilitation (25–28%)
    • Risk Monitoring and Reporting (19–20%)
    • Perform Specialized Risk Analyses (14–16%)

 

What are pretest questions?

Pretest questions are 20 questions which do not count in your score. These are added to certification exams to help PMI monitor the performance of a question before including it permanently in its databank of test questions.

 

Will I need to fulfill requirements to maintain my certification?

Yes, you do. Holders of the PMI-RMP credential will need to have 30 PDUs per three-year cycle. These 30 PDUs should comprise of minimum 18 Education PDUs and maximum 12 Giving Back PDUs. Education PDUs are further broken down into minimum 4 Technical PDUs, 4 Leadership PDUs, 4 Strategic PDUs, and 6 PDUs from any area of the PMI Talent Triangle.

 

Can I retake my certification exam if I fail?

Yes, you can. In addition to your first attempt, you can re-take the exam two more times within your one-year eligibility period.
